Sunscreens come in two basic formulations. One contains chemical compounds as the active ingredients and the other contains natural organic compounds. The two work very differently.
Most sunscreens on the market today are generally chemical based and must be absorbed into the skin to be effective via a chemical reaction with the UV rays.
Natural sunscreens, however, are mineral based. Zinc Oxide is the active ingredient and stays on the surface of the skin, harmlessly reflecting the sun’s rays like a mirror.
Currently over 1.5 million people are diagnosed with skin cancer every year in North America with many of these cases attributable to sun exposure and are entirely preventable if the correct protective measures are taken.
Over 80,000 cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in Canada each year, more than 5,000 of which are melanoma, the mostly deadly form of skin cancer.
You would think with the increased awareness and use of sunscreen that these numbers would be going down. They are not, they are actually increasing and it’s not difficult to understand why.
Skin cancer has gone up 92% since the sunscreen industry incorporated chemical compounds into sunscreens.
Some commonly found chemical compounds in sunscreens are:
Oxybenzone: Half of the beach and sport sunscreens contain this compound that penetrates the skin, gets into the bloodstream and acts like estrogen in the body. It can trigger allergic skin reactions.
Homosalate: A common sunscreen ingredient. Research indicates it is a weak hormone disruptor, and sunlight breaks down the chemical into harmful by-products.
Octinoxate: This common sunscreen ingredient is shown to have hormone-mimicking effects on laboratory animals.
Retinyl palmitate: On sun-exposed skin, retinyl palmitate may speed development of skin tumors and lesions, according to government studies.
